Review By Jim Allen, Limewire Store

New York City rockers Static Summer seamlessly blend pop and hard-rock influences on this eight-track EP. The title cut suggests what might happen if the '80s-influenced sound of bands like The Bravery and The Killers was edged one further notch along in rock history, a step further removed from its sources, and mingled with more contemporary flavors. "The Phoenix & The Fall," on the other hand, represents the other end of the spectrum of Static Summer's influences; it includes a guest appearance from Papa Roach front man Jacoby Shaddix, and brings a hammering, hard-rock feel to the fore, albeit still maintaining an unerring pop sensibility in the song structure. The punk-pop touches on "Church Bells" and the lustrous, low-key swooning sounds of the lilting, Beatles-informed "Leave the Light On" add even more musical flavors to the Static Summer pot. An alternate mix of "She's Not a Lover" turns up the crunch on the guitars, offering a different view of that tune's tantalizing possibilities. But whether they're leaning towards head-banging heavy-rock riffs or ultra-melodic, pure-pop choruses, Static Summer knows how to bring all of their varied inspirations together for an approach that never sounds anything less than true to itself throughout this EP.
